Platform
Mobil’s
Beryl B platform is a North Sea
platform installed in 1983 in the UK sector.
Challenge
Mobil
determined that existing protective fire walls on Beryl B
required upgrading to withstand predicted blast pressure
loads. The primary challenge related to the strengthening
of the fire walls without the use of hot works which would
necessitate platform shut-down.
MSL
Scope
On
the basis of MSL’s JIP on ‘Design Guidance for Carbon Fiber
Composites for the Strengthening and Repair of Offshore
Installations’, Mobil pursued a solution to strengthen
the fire walls using carbon fiber/epoxy
Benefits
Substantial
cost benefits were delivered without compromising safety through judicious
use of mitigating measures such as replacement of deck plate with grating.
The study was concluded within a timeframe consistent with the planned
maintenance schedules for the platforms.
