Platform
The Judy platform is a North Sea platform located in 240
ft of water in the UK sector.
Challenge
MSL is the retained structural consultant for the Judy
platform. Since Judy is a key asset for Phillips, MSL
provides a 24 hour rapid analysis response for any
incident such as fire, blast or ship impact.

Scope
The
project was divided into the following three phases:
Phase
one included developing structural models for the jacket, the topsides and
the flare tower. Benchmark developed models against the
design models. Perform verification analyses such as:
in-place strength and fatigue checks of the jacket,
strength check of the topsides. Perform nonlinear pushover
analyses to determine the platform reserve strength ratio.
Phase
two included collect monitored accelerations from Judy and select few
records relevant to structural response. Subject jacket
model to recorded sea environment and compare measured to
computed responses. Adjust structural analysis recipe to
represent field records.
Phase
three was to develop and optimize an inspection plan for the platform
via a reliability-based analysis including uncertainties
in fatigue life prediction models, stress concentration
factors and stress-strain relationships. Use Bayesian
techniques to develop inspection intervals.
Phase
four was to reassess structural integrity of platform and topsides due
to payload increase associated with tying the platform to
neighboring fields. Modify models to reflect the
structural and payload changes. Perform linear design
check analyses of topsides model and jacket. Assess effect
of topsides increase on fatigue life of platform joints.
Perform nonlinear pushovers to determine modified reserve
strength ratio.

Benefits
The structural integrity management process and rapid
assessment response minimizes the risk of lost production
for this key North Sea asset without increased risk to
personnel safety or to the environment.
